One of the key innovations that was included in the new guardianship legislation is the Supported Decision-Making model. This model is an alternative to guardianship which enables older people or people with disabilities to receive support from individuals to assist them in making decisions while enabling them to remain independent and preserve their right to liberty and autonomy. MARVA recruits and trains volunteers to serve in this capacity in order to assist people in need of support who do not have family or friends who can volunteer on their behalf, thus preventing the need to appoint a guardian for them.
